Beginning Video and Digital Media

This is not a course in commercial production. Instead, we focus on two objectives. We will explore and implement various digital production hardware and software as tools for the purposes of artistic invention. In conjunction, we will examine how the predominant modes of motion pictures function in our daily lives and explore alternative production practices. For 2021, the course can engage with areas of social justice and entrepreneurship by encouraging students to produce work related to social justice issues and envision a career in creative fields undergirded by the objectives of social entrepreneurship.

Creative Writing: Fiction, Poetry, Nonfiction and Comics

In this four-week online creative writing course, rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders will work with published authors, creative writing faculty, and MFA graduate students at the University of South Florida to develop their storytelling skills and engage with larger conversations about anti-racism and social justice. Studying different elements of craft and technique each week, students will read a range of published work and develop a vocabulary for discussing different genres of creative writing. Engaging with multi-genre prompts, students will write their own short story, poems, comics, and nonfiction and receive individualized feedback on their work from published authors. Through discussions on process and revision, students will learn about the different stages of the writing process and experiment with different writing forms and techniques.

Full Court: Intro to Law, Crime and Trials

The program will combine a college-level criminology course with outside of class enrichment activities, in partnership with the Judy Genshaft Honors College, designed to introduce high-school students to various legal careers. For the first three weeks, students will spend their mornings in class, Theories of Criminal Behavior, a course that will provide a foundation for the nature and types of crime and its causes. Afternoons will be spent with several panels of current pre-law college students, current law students enrolled at Stetson University Law School, and current attorneys practicing in the Tampa Bay area, where participants can learn about legal education and legal practice. With a shared understanding of crime and criminal behavior, students will build on course material through preparation for and participation in a mock trial competition during the final week of the program.
