for High School Students

Get a Head Start on Your College Career!

Are you a high school student who wants to experience a first taste of college life? With USF’s Pre-College summer programs, you can!

Spend your summer break pursuing academic interests, discovering career opportunities and exploring the independence of university life.

All programs are enriched with experiential learning, select field trips and guest speakers – all of which put theory into practice. Some programs even offer the opportunity to earn college credit.

Human Resources Management Certificate

Gain a comprehensive, practical foundation in human resources. This program is ideal for new HR professionals transitioning into the field, managers with HR responsibilities, experienced HR professionals seeking to update their skills and SHRM-certified professionals seeking to earn recertification credit. Topics include an introduction to HR management, compensation design, employee relations, equal employment opportunity, recruitment and human resources law.



Advanced Human Resources Certificate

Build upon a successful foundation in human resources. This program is ideal for students who have completed the HR Management Certificate, mid-career professionals seeking to update their skills and SHRM-certified professionals seeking to earn recertification credit. Topics include benefits planning, HR planning, HR communication effectiveness, performance appraisal systems and risk management.



SHRM Essentials of Human Resources

This introductory course offers a comprehensive overview of human resource roles and responsibilities and covers a wide range of introductory HR topics in a condensed, straightforward format. Up-to-date, easy-to-understand content ensures that you master HR concepts and apply them to everyday situations and issues. Increase your on-the-job confidence, understand your organization's complex HR issues and stay up-to-date on the latest HR laws and regulations.



SHRM Certified Professional or SHRM Senior Certified Professional Certification

Acquire the knowledge needed to sit for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP exam from an approved SHRM provider! Experienced instructors lead participants through the SHRM Learning System, historically ranked as the #1 HR certification prep tool. Choose from a three-week intensive or a 14-week program offered in Tampa or St. Petersburg, or our new self-paced online program.





STEM FOR SCHOLARS

This realistic college experience with input from multiple STEM fields culminates with an opportunity for students to present their projects at the closing ceremony. Students also will receive a STEM for Scholars Certificate at the completion of the program.



BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

This six-day summer program for high school students provides a hands-on opportunity to work with USF's electrical and biomedical engineering faculty to discover how engineering and the human body come together. Students will learn how technology can be used to record and monitor biological signals from the body, and how to use those signals to create better tools and mainstream technology applications such as advanced sensors, diagnostics and prosthetics.



THE NEXT PHYSICIAN AND HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL

During the academy, students will engage with USF's internationally-recognized faculty in a variety of world-class facilities housed in USF's College of Medicine, College of Arts & Sciences, College of Public Health and Moffitt Cancer Center. Students also will have opportunities to gain insights into managing the rigors of a pre-med program at a Preeminent university and how to write a competitive application for medical school.



THE NEXT SCIENTIST AND ENGINEER

This program offers hands-on experiences with brain drones, robotics, 3D printing and modeling, computational simulations in biology, chemistry, physics, and interdisciplinary sciences. Students will delve deeper into the study of science and engineering by conducting an interest-driven research project.



LEADERS AND SCHOLARS: COLLEGE PREPARATORY PROGRAM

During this six-day academically-intensive college preparatory program, students will be challenged to complete several "learning quests" that require them to be critical researchers, creative thinkers, academic readers, scholarly writers, problem solvers and effective leaders working in collaboration with other like-minded students to earn digital badges that prove they have what it takes to succeed at a Preeminent university.

COMMUNITY IN ACTION: BIG PROBLEMS, "MALL" SOLUTIONS

Students will work with non-profit organizations in the University Mall to see how community partners help to address some of Tampa’s large-scale problems. Students will be able to actively work with these partners to propose solutions to large urban issues affecting the Tampa Bay area and metropolitan areas around the country. Students will serve as civic leaders while supporting local initiatives.



FILMMAKING AS PHILOSOPHY

This four-week, for-credit program is designed to challenge students by exploring storytelling principles through the lens of filmmaking. Students will study current works in film across genres and identify / discuss meaning and theoretical approaches to filmmaking. Students can anticipate learning about all aspects of the filmmaking process from idea to screen and get a glimpse into the various disciplines one can study in a college-level fine arts or humanities program.



CODEBREAKHERS

CodeBreakHERs is a cybersecurity summer camp for rising 9-12th grade female students with an interest in computer science and cybersecurity. Students will participate in a range of activity pertaining to cybersecurity. The camp will be run with the help of the Whitehatters Computer Security Club (WCSC) to provide an opportunity for participants to work with current computer science students on activities. The camp is organized in collaboration with Attila Yavuz who is an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department.

CREATIVE WRITING: FICTION, POETRY, NONFICTON AND COMICS

Develop your storytelling skills! Through this program, you’ll read published works and make your own comics, write stories, craft poems and draft creative nonfiction essays. You’ll learn about the different stages of the writing process, experiment with different writing forms and techniques. At the conclusion of the program, you’ll read your work at a final reading open to family and friends.



LGBTQ+ IDENTITIES IN CULTURAL CONTEXT

Make personal, scholarly and professional connections with affirming community members, businesses and organizations to explore the ways that careers, activism and life skills interconnect. You’ll also examine the ways that LGBTQIA+ identities intersect with other identities like race, age, religion, socioeconomic class and more.



VIDEO GAMING, GAME DESIGN AND ESPORTS

Explore the exciting world of video game design and eSports! Through this program you’ll get hands-on gaming experiences and opportunities to learn the business aspects of this growing field. You’ll also explore the research components of video gaming and determine how they can contribute to the current body of research.

STEM for Scholars

Prepare for academic and college life with this program designed to expand your horizons in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. You'll develop critical thinking and conceptual creativity through active, hands-on participation in all aspects of the program, including work with cryptography cybersecurity. This is a four-week program with residential and commuter options.





Big Problems, "Mall" Solutions

Immerse yourself in project-based learning within the Design for X (DFX) lab and visit other active medical and engineering research labs on campus. This is a six-day residential program.





Leaders and Scholars: College Preparatory Program

Complete "learning quests" that require you to be a researcher, creative thinker, academic reader, scholarly writer, problem solver and effective leader. You'll utilize campus resources to complete mini-projects that will equip you with the skills to excel as first-time college student. The program culminates with a unique interactive colloquium where you will present your learning artifacts and research. This is a seven-day residential program.
